What is the pediatrics shelf exam?

The pediatrics shelf exam encompasses medical care for infants, childrens, and adolescents. It is designed to cover knowledge acquired during a third year pediatrics clerkship. It is generally considered one of the more difficult shelf exams. That being said, there are certain high yield topics that are tested again and again. If you are able to recognize certain common childhood rashes and how they present, those questions will be easy points on the exam. Your tutor can go over helpful mnemonics and memory aids to help with that. It is always worthwhile to review developmental milestones, vaccines, cystic fibrosis, diabetes insipidus, SIADH, sickle cell anemia, heme, renal, RSV bronchiolitis, croup, seizures, ADHD, and pharyngitis. Keep in mind that buzzwords are no longer as common as they once were (and this goes for all shelf exams!): so know what the buzzwords actually mean in terms of patient presentation.

How are the pediatrics shelf exam questions scored & what is the passing score?

The pediatrics shelf exam has 110 multiple-choice questions. The score is based off a scaled score and is not just a strict percentage correct. Different schools may implement a different passing score required based off the raw scaled score.

How is the pediatrics shelf exam test administered & how long is the pediatrics shelf exam?

The pediatrics shelf exam is usually administered through the NBME portal at either your school or at a Prometric center. There is usually 2 hours and 45 minutes given to complete the exam.
