What is the shelf exam?

The shelf exam is what medical students take at the end of clinical rotations to assess how much they have mastered the content and can apply their medical knowledge from the clinical environment. Students from allopathic medical schools take the NBME shelf exams, while students from osteopathic medical schools take the COMAT shelf exams. The questions that show up on the shelf exams relate to the clinical rotation they were on.

How is the shelf exam scored?

The passing score is different for each medical school, as they all implement their own score requirements. However the exams are standardized so they are compared across the national average against all the other students in the United States.

How is the shelf exam administered?

The shelf exams are not physical exams or practicals. They are taken online either at the student’s medical school or testing center like Prometric. The NBME shelf exams have 110 questions and the COMAT shelf exams have 125 questions. Both are given roughly 2 and a half hours to complete the exam. The questions are multiple choice questions. Scores are usually released within one to two weeks after the exam.

How much tutoring is needed?

Most students meet between 1-2 times per week for tutoring.

What does shelf exam tutoring include?

Every student will get a customized schedule to follow for their shelf exam. The schedule will be based off your specific progress, performance, and weaknesses in terms of what to work on. The schedule will be revised over time based off the progress over time. Students will meet with their Ace Med Boards tutor 1-on-1 over video call and go over questions in terms of how to analyze, approach, and answer the questions correctly.
